WeekendClimber Blog

So, I finally decided that I am going keep a little running blog of the daily life of your average weekend climber. I'm going to make up names so that I can blame the innocent, distort the truth so I can inflate my ego, and pretty much tell you what's on my mind. If you are offended, well then you ought to just go off and f*ck yourself. I'll keep the profanity to a minimum, but sometimes there are no other words that could possibly otherwise fit a particular situation and be so described, succinctly. In more direct terms, you have been warned. So blame yourself, as you should always do.

It's been nearly a year since my last post here, and to allay some concerns of a few, I am still around and hoping to get back to climbing soon. So why have I been so elusive for the last year, you might wonder? Well, I had the unfortunate experience of having to have surgery on a knee problem that has persisted for many years and finally came apart last winter. I was hoping that some physical therapy would solve the problem, but as it turned out, the problem was much more severe than both my doctor and I had assumed. Originally the diagnoses was Patellofemoral Chondromalacia, which is basically a biomechanical problem that can easily be fixed with Physical Therapy. Finally, after going through PT for three months and having little to no success, I had an MRI done which found the root of the problem. Little did I know how long it would take to heal.

So in my last blog post(nearly six weeks ago), I posted an excel spreadsheet that I was going to use for doing my workouts. After using that particular record-sheet, I decided that formulating the workout for the day was just far too confusing to really be of any use. In turn, I devised a 3 day per week full body foundation workout routine that covers all muscle groups in one session. This is more of the preferred method of building a foundation, as achieving full body fatigue will prepare your body for the strength training phase that comes after.

It has been nearly 3 months now of taking it easy and I think I've finally reached the point where my knee is well enough to start working out hard again. Of course this means that I have to start with the normal foundation building exercises before I can really start getting into the periodization that I use. You physical fitness foundation is an important stage to building a stronger, more powerful and agile body. Just like in building any structure, the foundation is always the most important step for stability and strength. If you have a poor foundation then everything that is built on top of it will just crumble from the ground up which is counterproductive to achieving you goals.

Dry Tooling 900 PDF Print E-mail

Having skipped another weekend to be in Lillooet, I was itching to get out and do something with one of the days this past weekend. Josh posted up to see if anyone wanted to go dry tooling on the Highway 900 crag and I took the bait. After a bit of some confusion on where to meet up, we found each other and ran a few laps on the routes that we bolted in 2006. I was feeling pretty good and cruised through the harder of the routes on top-rope and Josh followed suit quickly. Having styled that route with no problem, Josh geared up and pulled the rope for a Lead. In grand style, he made it up and over the top with no problem. After another lap on one of the far left routes, the sky started letting loose it's snowy, rainy mix that had been threatening all morning. Though it wasn't swinging tools on some nice blue ice, it was still worth the twenty minute drive out to gets some pulling done.

I've been working on getting some of the old reports done that I've been slacking off on completing and many only have pictures left to be added. I hope the ones I've added in the last few days have helped to peek your interest in the site and I'm working hard on getting more done. It's been a busy few months this past spring and now that summer is here, there's still a lot of climbing left to do that I have planned in the coming months. I have not even written about the 20+ days of ice climbing I did last winter and I have photos just setting on my computer gathering dust. I hope you enjoy what I've been able to add. Stay tuned...
